Personal Statement

Although always sensitive to environmental issues, Brian first became interested in cattle on public lands while conducting research on high altitude wetlands in northern Arizona. After spending a great deal of time around cattle during numerous field projects across Arizona and New Mexico, Brian became keenly aware that there were some major issues to be addressed regarding public lands grazing. There are no easy solutions to public lands grazing issues, but there are solutions. The key is in educating people to the point where they are willing to work towards those solutions. Currently, Brian is working for a small environmental consulting firm called GeoSystems Analysis, Inc. in Tucson, Arizona, working on projects that include using cattle to help reclaim copper mine tailings. Unsure of whether cattle are a true solution to reclaiming mine tailings, it is nonetheless an fascinating option that will be interesting to explore. With respect to the successful reclamation of disturbed lands using cattle, as well as any issue regarding the future of cattle in the west, the verdict is still out.
