Personal Statement

I'm a senior at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. My academic focus is environmental science and conservation biology. I grew up in Wyoming on a ranch on the North Platte River, and I've been interested in grazing issues for a long time. My family does not raise livestock, but cattle and sheep grazing is practiced on all of the land surrounding ours. It's impossible to overlook the impact of livestock on the land that borders us.

I'm currently writing my senior thesis on the disproportionate influence of the livestock industry over predator management in the western U.S. and the ecological consequences of this unfortunate development. I'm thrilled to add to the collection of literature that challenges the ranching-dominant ideology of the western U.S. and demands that other human and non-human interests be respected and valued.
