Superior Wilderness Action Network (SWAN)

Profession or Area of Expertise

Personal Statement

I'm emeritus professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. I'm founder, and now board president, of Superior Wilderness Action Network (SWAN), a wilderness advocacy and forest activist group. SWAN is one of the grassroot groups across the country that has lobbied for an end to commercial logging on federal lands (HR 1396, the McKinney-Leach Bill, now with some 70 cosponsors), from which less than 4% of the nation's timber is taken. A few years ago, I published a brief note regarding the ratio of domestic livestock to wild ungulates (2:1 in favor of livestock) in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. I'm interested in the degree to which the domestic livestock on public lands displace native fauna.
